“…The New Comic and Online Game.”

Some Firefly fans may know these things already, but here’s a rundown on the immediate future of awesome awesomeness.
The MMO, Firefly Online, is set to be released by Spark Plug Games and Quantum Mechanix both on PC and Macintosh next year with the intent of letting all us Browncoats squee ourselves silly. It’s not the only bit of Firefly news on the cards lately though, with the new comic planned for release and a board game that just recently hit shelves (and just as quickly came from them).
In Firefly Online players will commandeer their own ship, heading out into the ‘Verse with their own crew, looking for trouble and arriving just in time to be big damned heroes. Naturally you’d need an enemy to fight, so the developers are planning to include both Reavers and The Alliance to interrupt their plans and stop a man from doing whatever the Hel he wants. Amongst other plans, the team speculate on adding other playable factions at a later date but for the beginning period all players will begin the game as a Browncoat. Which suits me gorram perfectly.
Amongst the common features that you’d expect from an MMORPG, players can expect to pilot and customise their own three dimensional ships in several ways, partake in ship to ground combat, as well as taking the more diplomatic approach to their conflicts in order to wag their tongues out of given situations.
Naturally there’d be a central questline to the game as well as all those lovely little standalone missions that I think make the charm of many RPGs out there. In an exclusive interview with io9, Quantum Mechanix’s Andy Gore spake thusly:
“For us, the most exciting thing is player-created ‘jobs’ (the Firefly Online name for quests),” and that ”there will be a job-creation system where players will be able to craft adventures for other players to partake in. We’re looking forward to seeing what people do with that system.”
“…There will be a lot to do beyond quests. You can focus on [customising] your ride, getting a new ride, hiring a crew, keeping them happy, trading, crafting, collecting [items], or just flying around the multitude of terraformed worlds of the ‘Verse in the freeform flight simulator.”
Firefly Online is being developed with the Unity Engine. Spark Plug and QMX are currently planning a Summer 2014 release across PC, Mac, iOS and Android. Players can use the same character across both desktop and mobile devices.
Now what about that other, new tome of sheer sexiness? Here’s the summary for the new Firefly comic:
As the series begins, Mal and the crew are recouping from their recent strike against the sinister interplanetary government, The Alliance, in which they exposed government agencies as those responsible for the creation of the Reavers — the scourge of the universe. With River Tam in the co-pilot chair and a very pregnant Zoe reeling from the death of her husband, Wash, Mal is finding himself and his ship in greater danger than ever.
Sounds amazing doesn’t it? As you can tell, this new comic is set to take place after the Serenity movie and was announced rather recently by Dark Horse. Although the writer remains unknown the artist has been confirmed to be Georges Junty, of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics fame.
Now we at Nerds Raging love our readers to bits and are deeply understanding of anyone’s rabid love for Firefly, so it’s only natural that we give you something in return for your attentions. So here are the first two pages from the new comic.
